Go Dogs!
After high school I attended a small liberal arts college, Adrian College, home of the Bulldogs. I went there in hopes to participate on the women's basketball team. I made it through majority of all the 4:30 a.m. wake-up calls for running up hills, lifting weights and swimming in the pool. About one week before the season started I tore my rotator cuff as I was grabbing a rebound. This was the end of my basketball career at Adrian College and I was now going to have my second rotator cuff surgery.
"Valley"
I completed my freshman year at Adrian College and after many numerous trips home to see my younger sister participate in her school events, I decided that I needed to come back home. I chose to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College or better known as "Valley." I participated on the basketball team and completed two years of general education studies. I throughly enjoyed my time at "Valley" but after two years, it was time to move on.
Buck Up Broncos
After transferring to Western Michigan University, home of the Broncos, I still was not sure what I was going to major in. I went and spoke to a counselor and basically asked her what I could be with the credits I had. She informed me that I had a lot of credits in the health area field and that community health would get me done with school the fastest. I took classes in the community health area for one semester and quickly decided that this field was not for me. Within the community health program there were a lot of heath education major and minors. I always had an interest in coaching, and I thought if I wanted to coach I should go into teaching. Sadly, that's how I went into education. I quickly changed my major to health education and I minored in physical education. I have just completed my fourth year teaching and can honestly say I truly love my job. I am so fortunate to end up with a career that I love, especially considering how I got here.
Autobiography for Student Teaching
My name is Kelli VanSchoick and I grew up in a small town in Michigan known as Marcellus. I also graduated from Marcellus High School. Marcellus is located approximately 20 minutes south of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Marcellus is a very small town with a population of about 2,500 people.
Throughout my school career at Marcellus I was very involved with school activities and the community. I participated in basketball, volleyball, softball and cross country. I was also a member of student council and helped out with the Marcellus Area Assistance Program (M.A.A.P.). MAAP is a program for individuals living in Marcellus who cannot afford to adequately feed themselves. This program receives food from donors around the area. The food is then divided up according to an individual’s need. Around the first of every month an individual who is signed up for this program is allowed to come to the MAAP location and pick up their food. My high school preparation has helped me dramatically at the college level and especially helped me develop team skills which are essential for any job.
After graduating from high school I was extremely excited to start college. My first year of college I chose to attended Adrian College and this turned out not to be the best place for me. I then transferred to Kalamazoo Valley Community College and immediately felt at home. I was enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for 2 years where I finished up most of my general education requirements before transferring to Western Michigan University.
Throughout my life I have always had a love of working with children of all ages. During my adolescent years I was always babysitting for a variety of children or helping out with different functions at the church I attend. I also helped out with a wide range of sports for children younger than myself. I found that my previous experiences were extremely rewarding. The most memorable experience I had working with children happened my senior year of high school. For one class period I was a teacher’s aid for a special education classroom and I immediately knew that I wanted to work with children for the rest of my life.
Throughout my life I have had many jobs and all involve working with others. I am currently employed at a local golf course. I have been employed here for the last 5 summers and have loved every minute of it. I have developed personal relationships with co-workers and many customers who have developed into life-long friends. This job has made me more outgoing, as I deal with a wide range of personalities every day. I also worked at Meijer for 2 years during high school. At Meijer I developed team work skills which I still use in my every day life. The last job I had was for one summer at a day care. At the day care I worked with children ages 3 months up to the age of 15. Through all these jobs, I have had developed life-long skills that have helped me develop into the person I am today.
I want to become a teacher because I love working, teaching, and helping out children of all ages. My goal is to make a positive influence on every one of my future students. A huge interest and concern that I have is the increase of childhood obesity. I think a reason why this health issue is increasing is because parents and children are not properly educated on what to eat or how to exercise properly. When I become a health educator, I want all children to have the opportunity to have the knowledge of simple things such as eating, exercising, and stress management. My ultimate goal as a health educator is to increase the quality of my students’ life.
Teaching is a huge responsibility, as teachers deal with a variety of students, parents and guardians. Teachers are going to deal with many different levels of economic status, beliefs, religions, personalities, and much more. Teaching is not a career for all individuals as it involves a large amount of work and is a never ending challenge. I am ready to accept that challenge and become a great and a positively influential teacher.
